Ihr liewe Leit:

Letscht Woch hen mer em Salli Holsbock (der Harvey M. Miller, 1871-1939) seim Gedicht vun der Nacht vorm Grischtaag gelese. Un heit lese mer was er vum neegschte Daag gschriwwe hot, "Der Neegscht Marrige":

Ich denk ser Saendi waar exseit
   Letscht Nacht in daere Schtrimperei,
Fer so wie's guckt grickt er der Blame
   Fer all die Grischtdaag Mixerei;
Nau, in der Palli ihre Schtrump
Do sin Paar Gallus un en Drum,
Un datt im Tschecki seim is nix
   Ass Hosse mit Frills unnerum.
Die Tilli hot Paar Schtiwwel grickt,
Der Ike, daer hot en Lumbe-bopp,
Der Meik en Frack un Haarband mit,
   Un die Saeli,be Tschinks, en Iwwerrock;
Der Simmi hot en Bannet, schur,
   Getrimmt mit rod Haahneschwens,
(Der Saendi hockt im Kiche-eck
Un hot gaar ken roder Bens.)

Ihr Vedder datt draus wisst gewiss was ser Salli meent!
Un nau iss der Yaahr do schunn widder schiergarr verbei. Do misse mer gewisse en Neiyaahrswunsch hawwe.

Un all dieyenigen
Die zu diesem Haus ein - un ausgehen
Ein glickliches neies Yaahr
Ein gesunde Leib un langes Leben
Des will eich Gott aus Gnade geben.
Nun will ich es waagen
Un eich ein yederm fraagen
Ob bei daere Schiessen un es Gnallen
Heit vor eirem Haus darf schallen
Denn ich un meine Kummeraaden
Haben alle Gewehre un wohlgelaaden
Wir schtehen dahie ab zur Seite
Un nau schiessen vieri ab mit Freide
So will ich meine Wunsch beschliessen
Un hoffe dass es eich nicht dutt verdriessen
Dieweil mir heeren noch ken Verdruss
So sollt ihr here unseren Schuss
Die Schuss die mir nin tun
Die tun mir eich zu ehren
Wir schtehen uff eirem Land
Un haben unsere Gewehr in der Hand
Un unsere Haahne wohlgeschpannt
Sobald mir unsere Haahne ricken
Sobald ihr kenne sehen des Feier blicken.

Macht's gut,

Dear people:

Last week we read Solly Hulsbuck's (Harvey M. Miller, 1871-1939) poem about the night before Christmas. And today we will read what he wrote about the next day, "The Next Morning":

I think Santa was excited
   Last night in this stocking-mess,
The way it looks, he gets the blame
   For all this Christmas mix-up;
Now, in Polly's stocking
There are a pair of suspenders and a drum,
And there in Jakey's is nothing
But pants with frills around the bottom.
Tilly got a pair of boots,
Ike, he has a rag doll,
Mike, a dress along with a hair ribbon,
   And Sally, by jinks, an overcoat;
Simmy got a bonnet sure,
   Trimmed with red cock-feathers,
(Santa sits in a kitchen-corner
And doesn't have a red cent left.)

You fathers out there certainly know what Solly is getting at!
And now this here year is already again almost over. So we certainly have to have a New Year's Wish. Here are a few lines from a wish that the Pennsylvania German Society published in their quarterly "The Rainbow" in 1973:

I wish you a nice New Year
I wish you and your housewife
Sons and daughters, hired hands and maids
And all those
Who to this house go in and out
A happy New Year
A healthy body and long life
Which God wants to give you out of grace.
Now I want to dare
To ask each one of you
Whether this shooting and banging
Today before your house may resound
Because I and my comrades
All have guns, well-loaded
We stand here to one side
And now shoot off four of them with joy
So I want to end my wish
And hope that it doesn't displease you
Since we do not hear any displeasure
Therefore you shall hear our shot
The shots that we now do
We do to your honor
We stand on your land
And have our guns in our hands
And our gun-hammers well cocked
As soon as we move the hammers
Then you will be able to see the fire (flash).

Take care,
The Old Professor
